High Risk Pregnancy

This is pregnancies where the risk for complications is significantly high. The complications can be with the mother, the baby or both. These pregnancies require specialist care in order to prevent and treat these complications. The common factors that contribute to a pregnancy being classified as high risk include advanced maternal age (mothers above 40), teenage pregnancies (under 18), obesity, mothers with chronic medical conditions, other medications in pregnancy, previous preterm labour, and previous pregnancy and delivery complications with poor outcomes.

Frequently Asked

WHAT CONDITIONS DOES A GYNAECOLOGIST TREAT?

Gynaecologists can treat a wide variety of conditions, some of which include:
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Menopause symptoms
  • Sexually transmitted infections or diseases (STIs or STDs)
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Vaginal discomforts like itching and burning
  • Infertility

It is a painful disorder that happens when the endometrium, the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus, grows outside it. The tissue will act like regular uterine tissue during the menstrual period: it will break apart and bleed at the end of the cycle. However, because this blood has nowhere to go, the surrounding areas may become inflamed or swollen.

  • Back pain during your period
  • Severe menstrual cramps
  • Pain when pooping or peeing, especially during your period
  • Unusual or heavy bleeding during periods
  • Blood in your stool or urine
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Painful sex
  • Constant fatigue
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

A Pap smear is a special test that uses scrapings of cells to determine if a patient has or may be in the first stages of cervical cancer. The doctor uses a small tool to scrape and collect cells from the woman’s cervix. The cells are then sent away to be tested. If the test shows abnormal cell activity, the doctor may choose to do a biopsy to determine whether or not cancer is present. Catching cervical cancer in its earliest stages is best because it opens up a wide selection of treatment options the doctor and patient can choose from.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that causes women to have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or an excess of the male hormone, androgen.
